Knee and hip replacements are the most successful orthopedic procedures. To
maximize surgical outcome, you should allow for a time of healing before
returning to routine activities. When you can get back to work and drive
again after joint replacement will vary from person to person. However,
here are some general guidelines:
Getting Back to Work
If you have a sedentary job, involving mostly desk work or you work from
home, you may be able to get back to work in 2-4 weeks depending on pain
control and how comfortable you are sitting for a reasonable amount of
time. People with physically demanding jobs such as electricians, plumbers,
or carpenters may need about 12 weeks before returning to full duty. On
average, it’s about 4-6 weeks for most people.
Getting Back to Driving
How soon you can drive depends on which side you're operated on. If you
have an automatic transmission car and you’re operated on your non-driving
side (left hip or knee), you may be able to drive soon after you wean off
of any narcotic pain medication if these have been prescribed to you. This
could be within 2 weeks after your surgery. If you’re operated on your
driving side (right hip or knee) or you have a manual transmission vehicle,
it may take an extra couple of weeks. For most individuals that should be
around 4 weeks after surgery.
